Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tulsa OK
1230 AM CDT Sat Jun 27 2026

...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM...

.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 1228 AM CDT Sat Jun 27 2026

- The potential for locally heavy rainfall and rapid onset flash
flooding is the main concern through Saturday morning. Limited
threat of severe weather through early Saturday morning.

- A big shift in the weather pattern will bring hot, humid and
dry weather starting this weekend on into next week. Heat
advisory headlines will likely be needed.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(Through Saturday)
Issued at 1228 AM CDT Sat Jun 27 2026

Clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms were ongoing late
Friday evening across portions of the region, particularly along
and north of I-44 in far NE OK and in C OK. This activity is
likely to continue through the overnight period owing to continued
WAA as a strengthening LLJ impinges on remnant outflow boundaries
in the area. Near-term guidance indicates a MCV/vort max will
slide east over the area during the early morning hours which will
keep at least low rain chances going past sunrise.

Heavy rainfall and flash flooding potential are the main concerns
through the overnight hours, as slow-moving storms will continue
to be efficient rainfall producers within an anomalously moist
environment (PWATs > 2 in). Rainfall rates in excess of 2 in/hr
and totals between 2-4 inches (locally greater than 5 inches) will
be possible in the hardest hit areas tonight. This will continue
to lead to rapid-onset flash flooding, potentially life-
threatening, as soils remain saturated from previous days
rainfall.

Guidance generally points to two areas of heaviest rainfall in
the forecast area tonight, one of which is already occurring near
the OK-KS border in NE OK, and another further to the south /
southwest. So far, locations near the OK-KS border have received
the most rainfall with flash flooding ongoing as a slow-moving
line of regenerating storms persists. This area of convection may
tend to sag south and expand eastward overnight with continued
flash flood potential. To the southwest, in central Oklahoma,
strong to severe storms have recently become more concentrated
near the Oklahoma City metro area. As this activity slides east-
southeast with time, a focused area of heavy rainfall is forecast
to develop overnight with increasing low- level flow. While some
uncertainty still exists with exact placement, current indications
paint the heaviest rainfall axis along and north of I-40 in
Creek, Okfuskee, and Okmulgee counties. These areas have seen
several inches of rainfall over the past few days and are
particularly susceptible to flash flooding. Aforementioned storms
closer to the OK-KS border may tend to weaken if this southern
band of storms becomes dominant. A Flood Watch remains in effect
for all of northeast Oklahoma and far northwest Arkansas until 7
AM. The severe threat will tend to diminish with time, but
marginally severe wind or hail remains possible into the early
morning.

Most rainfall is expected to conclude by mid-late morning as
storms weaken and shift east of the area. Skies will clear from
west to east through the day with plenty of sunshine expected
during the afternoon. This will allow temperatures to warm into
the upper 80s/lower 90s. With dewpoints remaining elevated, heat
indices will likely rise above 100 degrees and perhaps above 105
degrees (advisory criteria) this afternoon. An advisory may become
required, but with uncertainty regarding lingering precip/cloud
cover during the morning, will hold off on issuing with this
forecast cycle.

.LONG TERM...
(Saturday night through Friday)
Issued at 1228 AM CDT Sat Jun 27 2026

Much quieter weather is forecast through the remainder of the
forecast period as ridging moves into the region. Temperatures
will remain very warm over the next several days, with highs in
the 90s and lows in the 70s. Elevated dewpoints will continue to
provide heat indices over 100-105 degrees each day, and heat
headlines will likely be needed. While some isolated afternoon
convection will be possible by mid to late next week, mainly
across the terrain of NW AR/SE OK, dry conditions overall are
expected.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1221 AM CDT Sat Jun 27 2026

VFR conditions will prevail through the period outside of
thunderstorm impacts. Ongoing storms located over central OK will
eventually expand into part of northeast OK over the next few
hours and ultimately into northwest AR after 09z. IFR conditions
can be expected within storms along with gusty and erratic winds.
Showers and storms will decrease from the west Saturday morning
with decreasing clouds and gusty south winds through the day.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tulsa OK
1224 AM CDT Sat Jun 27 2026

...New AVIATION...

.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 1221 AM CDT Sat Jun 27 2026

- The potential for locally heavy rainfall totals that could lead
to rapid onset flash flooding is the main concern through
 Saturday morning.

- There is a limited severe weather risk this afternoon and
evening with any storms that develop.

- A big shift in the weather pattern will bring hot, humid and
dry weather starting this weekend on into next week. Heat
advisory headlines will likely be needed.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(Through tonight )
Issued at 1226 PM CDT Fri Jun 26 2026

A boundary extends from an area of low pressure over the TX
Panhandle along the OK/KS border region and into the Ozarks of
Missouri. The boundary is slowly sagging south and is expected to
focus convection over NE OK and SW MO, possibly into far NW AR,
this afternoon with increasing coverage into the evening. Some
additional warm advection storms are also expected overnight,
mainly north of the boundary. Slow-moving and/or training storms
in a high PWAT environment will have the potential to drop
locally high-end totals somewhere across NE OK and far NW AR
through Saturday morning. CAMs suggest potential for isolated 3 to
7 inch amounts. With the soils already fairly saturated, most of
this rainfall is likely to become runoff, leading to rapid-onset
flash flooding. Some main- stem river flooding is also possible.
The going Flood Watch has been extended in time to 7 AM Saturday,
and expanded in area to include Benton and Carroll counties in AR
near the MO border.

Deep-layer shear is weaker today, so a more organized severe
weather event is not expected. However, storms may certainly
become severe at least briefly, with the primary threat being
locally damaging wind. Marginally severe hail is possible. The
severe threat will peak during the afternoon and into the early
evening hours, dropping off overnight.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Tomorrow through Friday)
Issued at 1226 PM CDT Fri Jun 26 2026

There will be some chance for storms into Saturday morning as
whatever is left coming off the High Plains this afternoon comes
east. It is possible than an MCV forms and helps to keep the
activity going farther east. While the potential for heavy
rainfall will be dropping by this time, any additional rains on
top of areas hit hard tonight could lead to more flooding. By
Saturday afternoon, low pressure developing over northeast CO will
draw the boundary north and away from the region, as upper heights
rise with the building ridge downstream from the western CONUS
trough. This will bring an end to the recent wet regime, and we
will make an abrupt shift toward hot, humid and dry weather as we
head into next week. While a few spots could get close to advisory
criteria along the highway 75 corridor in NE OK as soon as
tomorrow afternoon, the afternoon heat index forecast leans toward
Monday as the first day of what could be several days in a row of
heat headlines next week.

Ensemble means place the H5 ridge center initially over the
Mississippi Valley with a shift toward the Ohio Valley as we head
deeper into next week. Daily storm chances along the lee trough
will stay out west, while moisture will begin to increase from the
southeast on the back side of the ridge. Some low chances for
mainly afternoon terrain-enduced showers and storms are possible
beginning the middle of next week. By next weekend, ensemble data
has the ridge retrograding over our area and then to our west with
very little in the way of rain chances.

Mesoscale Precipitation Discussion 0536
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
120 AM EDT Sat Jun 27 2026

Areas affected...Southern Kansas, Northern & Central Oklahoma

Concerning...Heavy rainfall...Flash flooding possible

Valid 270519Z - 271000Z

Summary...Showers and thunderstorms will continue overnight across
north-central Oklahoma and southern Kansas. Rainfall rates of
1-2"/hr are expected, with through repeating rounds could generate
2-3" of rain with locally higher amounts. Flash flooding may
result.

Discussion...The regional radar mosaic tonight indicates two
clusters of slow moving thunderstorms persisting across OK. The
first is a very slow moving area across far northeast OK, while a
second area is steadily expanding across north-central OK. This
activity is occurring within extremely favorable thermodynamics
characterized by PWs of 1.8 - 2.1 inches, and MUCAPE of more than
2000 J/kg leading to hourly rainfall measured by MRMS in excess of
2" in the strongest storms. Forcing for ascent is being driven
both by subtle PVA/height falls downstream of an approaching
shortwave, and the increasingly impressive isentropic ascent of
the accelerating LLJ from the S/SW.

As the shortwave pushes east during the next few hours, the
response at the low levels will be a continued intensification of
the LLJ, progged to rise from the current 25-30 kts (measured via
regional VWPs) to as high as 40+ kts by daybreak. While this will
also feature some subtle veering more to the SW which will reduce
the resulting upglide, the accompanying moist advection will reach
more than +2 sigma according to the SREF, maintaining robust PWs
to support heavy rainfall. The high-res CAMs suggest that storms
will continue to fire on the nose of the LLJ and in the vicinity
of the stationary front positioned near the OK/KS border, with
additional activity developing immediately downstream of the
shortwave as it moves east. Cells that form along the LLJ will
have the potential to backbuild and move slowly NW to SE before
the convection accompanying the shortwave sweeps through by
morning. This suggests a strong likelihood for multiple rounds of
storms in many areas, and with both the HREF and REFS indicating a
30-60% chance of at least 1"/hr rainfall rates, total rain
accumulation of 2-3" with higher totals is expected.

This area has been saturated recently, reflected by 7-day rainfall
that has been generally more than 300% of normal (in some places
more than 600% of normal) which has reduced FFG to as low as
1.5-2"/3hrs. Any heavy rain rates moving atop these vulnerable
soils would likely create rapid runoff, so instances of flash
flooding may continue through early morning.

Mesoscale Discussion 1344
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0821 PM CDT Fri Jun 26 2026

Areas affected...portions of northern Oklahoma...far southern
Kansas...and far southwestern Missouri

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 401...

Valid 270121Z - 270245Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 401
continues.

SUMMARY...Widely scattered thunderstorms may persist into the
overnight hours, but the severe risk should gradually diminish with
time. Isolated large hail and damaging wind gusts remain possible in
the short-term, however.

DISCUSSION...Ongoing convection has largely congealed into several
clusters along developing cold pools and a surface cold front across
northern Oklahoma/southern Kansas over the past hour. Modest
effective shear (generally 30-35 kts or less) along the southern
periphery of a subtle, mid-level wave continues to favor an
outflow-dominant, multicellular storm mode and the potential for
marginal supercell structures with any discrete convection. While a
strengthening low-level jet, with an axis displaced across western
Oklahoma, may aid in the maintenance of thunderstorms into tonight,
gradual low-level stabilization should yield a diminishing severe
risk over the next couple of hours. Isolated large hail and
occasional damaging/severe wind gusts will continue to be possible
with ongoing convection in the meantime, however.
